Best Domain Name Registers To Buy Domain Names

Best Domain Name Registers To Buy Domain Names

Buying a domain name is a crucial step to determine the success or failure of a business. Domain register companies are getting more and more businesses due to increasing demand on top level domain names. Therefor prior to buy domain name you should consider the vital factors on domain selection. I have already discussed Top 10 vital factors to be considered before buy your domain name in one of my previous posts. And another article has already addressed on the factors to be considered while selecting a good domain name provider.

This article is going to be slightly different from both of the previous posts, because here I am going to introduce you the best domain registers in world wild web. As we all know there are hundreds of services are operating on web. But the best are always best. Here are the best domain name registers;

1. NameCheap.Com (1 year = 9.98$)

namecheap buy domain name

Namecheap is a ICANN accredited domain name registrar and web hosting company. It was founded on year 2000. At the moment they have over 500,000 and they are managing around 3,000,000 domains at the moment. As the name suggest they offer top level domain names with a competitive price. Following is a screenshot taken from Namecheap.com to display the current prices of new domain names. But they have coupon codes where you can buy domain name below the mentioned rate of following screenshot. Usually you can buy a [dot]com domain name for $9.98 at anytime.

Namecheap.com is my favourite domain name register and they have 24/7 day solid customer support. All of my domains are registered at Namecheap except one domain. I personally know their effective customer support.

Then this domain provider provides you a list of freebies with your domain name. Free URL and e-mail forwarding, free transferring of domain, domain parking and customization and domain redirection to your own host are included to this freebie package.

2. Godaddy.Com (1 year = $11.99)

godaddy domain name buy domain name

Godaddy.com is the world largest ICANN accredited domain registrar founded  on 1997 which consist of more than 10 million of customers by now. There are more than 52 million domains are registered through this domain seller.

Their usual domain price is about 11.99$, but they also have different coupons that gives some huge discounts on buying domains. Some coupons allow you to buy domain names even at about $5.

I have one domain registered with Godaddy.com and I contacted them too on several issues. So I know their customer support is great. It is a 24/7 day solid customer support.

3. 1&1 (1 year = $4.99)

1&1 domain names

One of the cheapest domain name provider on web. First year they charge only $4.99 per domain, there after they will charge $9.99 per year. So this domain provider is a good place for the people who are looking for cheap domains.

All 1&1 domain registrations consist of a  five-page starter website, one email account (consist of 2GB of storage) and free private domain registration. The company provides free domain transferring service as well. They also provide 24/7 day customer support.

4. Name (1 year = $10.99)

name.com domains

Name.com is another domain seller in current domain market. It goes beyond the regular domain selling. It shows you the domains which are on auctions. But other domain providing services will not show you the domains which are on auctions. They only say the domain is unavailable. This is also a famous company in domain business.

Above four domain sellers are the top domain name providers on web. I can highly recommend both Namecheap.com and the Gadaddy.com for buying a domain name for your blog. Because I am using both services for my blogs. The 3rd and 4th services are also good and I read lot of reviews before writing this articles. But I can’t say exactly since I never used that services for domain registration.

My advice is always look at the quality and never think too much about money. The only difference between the best domain provider and the cheapest domain provider is about $5-$6. Don’t think too much to spend that $5-$6. If you think too much on it, you may end up with suffering because you are going to caught in to a poor quality domain provider. So go for Namecheap.com or Godaddy.com to buy your domain.

Google+ Gains Nearly 10 Million Users In First 2 Days Of Being Open To The Public

A Google+ post by Paul Allen, founder of ancestry.com and a self-proclaimed “unofficial Google+ statistician, shows significant growth of Google’s social network since opening to the public.   These growth rates were only first seen during the first few weeks of field testing when the user numbers were very low.  In terms of the current growth spurt Allen states:
“it is clear that Google+ is absolutely exploding — 30% growth in just 2 days and with a base of nearly 30 million members already.”

His previous Google+ users estimate was 28.7 Million users on September 9th a number that has increased to 43.3 million  current users.  He also stated that “most of the growth coming in the last 2 days.”
So what does this mean? Google+ may be cementing themselves as a credible social network, but the mass exodus from Facebook just isn’t happening. Facebook is still the powerhouse network with 800 million+ users and all of the layout complaints aren’t adding up to astounding departure numbers … yet.
Other notable Google+ timeline stats are:
  • Over 1 million mark (1.7 million) – 7/4
  • 4.5 million user mark – 7/10/11
  • 10 million user mark – 7/12/11

Xbox LIVE on Windows 8 Video

Today Microsoft dove into detail about the Xbox LIVE service integration with Windows 8. The addition of Xbox LIVE on Windows 8 will bring general and advanced gamers a similar experience as their console to the desktop.
Microsoft showed off some demonstration about how the Xbox LIVE integration works by showing off leaderboards, achievements and even full 60fps gameplay.
Microsoft is looking to give users a similar experience across all platforms for Xbox LIVE. Xbox 360 will receive a dashboard update later this year that will feature a new Metro-style layout. Xbox.com will also undergo a minor update to stretch the Xbox Metro theme across all platforms, even the web.
Games will be able to unlock achievements & gamerscore, get ranked on leaderboards, unlock avatar awards, use friends and community, set beacons and play multiplayer games with friends. Users will also be able to view profiles, friends gamerscore and even compare your games with your friends.
The biggest feature is that Microsoft is bringing Async to Windows 8, so users on the PC can play with other PC users, Windows Phone 7 users and even Xbox 360 users. The power of Async will connect gamers on all platforms, no matter where in the world you are.
If you've ever wanted to setup a game with friends, you can set up a ‘beacon' that will alert your friends that you will be playing a specific game at a specific time. This will help manage clan matches and connect you with friends.
Developers will have a sigh of relief knowing that Microsoft is introducing enhanced security measures with their Windows 8 games.  Pirated games will not be able to unlock achievements, use leaderboards, play online with friends or any other service that Xbox LIVE offers when a game has been detected as illegitimate.
Microsoft announced that there are currently 35 million subscribers on Xbox LIVE, with over 2.1 billion hours played per month - that is roughly 60 hours per user, per month. To date, users have unlocked 176 trillion gamer score, yes, trillion.
Windows 8 Xbox LIVE integration definitely has a lot of potential to become a huge success with not only advanced gamers, but tablet users who just want to play a simple card game.

Favorite new Facebook feature?

We now know that Americans blow billions of minutes each month on Facebook. It's no wonder folks get in a tizzy when a new feature rolls out.
This week has been a particularly busy one when it comes to Facebook-related improvements. Which of these shiny new features are you most enamored by?
Subscribe option: The subscribe button makes it easier to get just the information you want. Click on it and get updates from that profile in your news feed. This will even work for public updates from some profiles that you're not directly friends with.
Smart Lists: Smart Lists will automatically shuffle your gazillions of friends into groups related to school, work, city, and family. You can then make manual adjustments.
Skype adds Facebook for Mac: Mac users finally get the full Skype-loves-Facebook treatment that Windows users had already been enjoying. The Skype 5.4 for Mac beta lets you message friends, update your status, and read posts from within the program.
Less frequent e-mail alerts: Facebook e-mailed some users telling them to start expecting fewer e-mail notifications from the company. If you prefer to keep your e-mail alerts just the way they are, however, you can turn this new feature off.
Take a moment from updating your status to let us know what floats your social-networking boat. Which new Facebook feature are you most excited about? Vote in our poll and be sure to elaborate in the comments section.

Why Windows 8 isn't an iOS copycat

This week saw the latest step towards the release of Windows 8, the next major version of Microsoft's operating system that represents one of the biggest changes in the history of the platform.
At its Build conference on Tuesday, Microsoft spent more than two hours on stage detailing its next OS. While the software isn't expected to make it into consumer hands until sometime next year, we now have a clearer picture of how Microsoft is positioning it to an industry that's shifted its purchases (and affections) from desktops to notebooks, and now portable devices like tablets and smartphones.
In short, Windows 8 is Microsoft's big answer to that broadening landscape: a product that can power nearly all machines, with an interface that can adapt along the way. That right there is one of the biggest differences between Microsoft's vision of computing and Apple's, which created a separate OS to power its portables, while keeping the desktop OS for its Intel-based machines.
However that separation has led to a massive difference in the way consumers look at operating systems, particularly with how often that software is updated, bringing new features to hardware months and years after a purchase. By splitting up the two OSes, Apple was able to iterate quickly, rolling out major releases on an annual basis, while continuing to offer Mac OS X updates at their usual rate. Now the big question is how that will work with Windows 8 with regards to Metro, Microsoft's touch-friendly UI that's been designed for tablets running Windows 8.
Microsoft has traditionally released a new version of Windows every few years, but tablet users are now accustomed to more frequent feature updates. For proof of that, you can look at the iPad, which launched without multitasking and a number of other features the iPhone had, only to get it later with a software update. Android users face a similar future, with the promise of additional software updates.
Comparatively, Microsoft has saved those big feature updates for major releases, and charged for them too. This has created a cycle where developers in the Apple camp can depend software updates to build on top of: Mac OS X developers have come to expect a major update every few years, with iOS getting updates every year.
What does that mean for Windows 8 though? Will the lucrative tradition of releasing a major update every few years continue, while the Metro interface is left untouched, or does Microsoft intend to update it more often to keep up with the Joneses? Therein lies one of the potential drawback of trying to provide everything in one package. It's also something to watch considering how closely connected Windows 8's Metro interface is tied to Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 software, which so far has followed the speedier update trend.
The major thing Microsoft has going for it with Windows 8 is how much more open it is to letting third-parties make adjustments to the operating system itself. On the non-Metro side of Windows this is unchanged, with backwards compatibility for apps, a bevy of third-party plug-ins, and software that can run behind the scenes to custom-tailor your computing experience. What's unclear is how that will shape up on the Metro side of Windows 8.
During the Build keynote, we saw that users could extend what can be done from within an app based on other applications you had installed. In that case, it was a sharing app letting a user share the Web page they were on in IE10. But how much deeper Microsoft will let third-parties go with that customization? That wasn't shown off at Build.
One other big question that remains is whether Microsoft can woo developers to its platform with the promise of scale. Windows president Steven Sinofsky pitched the 5,000 developers who were at the Build keynote on the merits of building on Windows 8, based on the fact that there "could be 400 million people when this product launches."
Yet, even at 400 million, that could be a splintered group for developers to target. For instance, an application built for touchscreen tablets will only be aimed at those with the newer portables, which represents a smaller group (read: less revenue potential) and one with potentially different buying habits than desktop users (read: they might not pay as much per app). Then there are high-end games, which would be unplayable on the newer tablets for lack of a beefy CPU and graphics card. Yet those two things can sit side by side on Windows 8, Microsoft says.
So what are developers to do? If they want the money, they go with the bigger platform, which is traditional desktop users, or a competitor like Apple or Google. That, or they can bet on the future and hope it takes off, with them being on the ground floor.
To sweeten the deal, Microsoft's tried to remove any barriers to entry. That includes letting apps with different requirements sit side by side in its store, as well as offering developers a way to offer free trials of their software--both things Apple does not. It's also shown off more of its vision about where it wants to be, well ahead of when the actual software is ready for end users.
These bets could very well pay off for both users and developers in the long run, with applications that can tailor themselves to run on just about any hardware, and change the very deepest parts of Windows to a user's exact liking. If Microsoft can deliver that with Windows 8, it will be treading ground that Apple hasn't.

Windows 8 on Samsung 700T Tablet at Microsoft BUILD - video

The Samsung Series 700 tablet will be coming soon, and when it does, it will have Windows 7 on-board. But Samsung likes to get products into developers' hands, as evidenced by its Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Chromebook giveaways to attendees at Google's I/O developers conference. Microsoft's new flagship gets no less royal of a treatment, with each of the 5,000 attendees of Microsoft's BUILD conference getting a a 700T Windows Developer Preview tablet PC and Bluetooth keyboard combo. Unlike the Galaxy Tab and Chromebook, though, this special version is by no means representative of a shipping product—Windows 8 is in way too early a stage for that.

Rather than attempt to outright review this mythical piece of hardware, I'm going to instead identify five things each that I like and don't like about it, as configured with the developers' preview of Windows 8. The bottom line is that the future of Windows on a tablet is looking up, with the coming of Windows 8, but Microsoft and hardware manufacturers will both have their work cut out for them to make Windows 8 appeal to consumers ready to open their wallet for an iPad.

Twitter Crosses 100 Million Active-User Milestone

twitter has a long way to go before its micro-blogging service  catches up with Facebook, but the social-media darling just crossed another milestone: 100 million active users, and in only five years.
Twitter reports that more than half of those 100 million active users log on every day to follow their interests. In other words, Twitter isn't all about sending 140-character posts. Many sign in just to eavesdrop on what's happening around the world in their areas of interest.
"Twitter's global reach gives a voice  to people around the world and as far away as the International Space Station," Twitter said in a blog post. "After launching Hindi, Filipino, Malay and Simplified and Traditional Chinese in the coming weeks, Twitter will support  17 different languages."
Twitter's Shrewd Moves
To its credit, Twitter shrewdly opened its API so that companies of all sizes -- most notably media organizations -- could tweet articles and blog posts and, most recently, follow accounts without having to leave the web page they are on, said Jake Wengroff, global director of social media strategy and research at Frost & Sullivan.

"Twitter also allowed for the creation of thousands of Twitter companion products and applications, including mobile  clients, increasing its reach exponentially. This move, however, is being reconsidered: Twitter has made several big moves of late to rein in the ownership of its product, platform, and brand," Wengroff said.
"In May 2011, Twitter purchased TweetDeck, one of the largest social media engagement platforms, for $40 million, and soon after rolled out its own URL-shortening and photo-upload services, ostensibly to wrest usage away from third-party apps."
Twitter VIPs
Choosing to focus more on trends than controversy, Twitter went on in its announcement to break down some of its more notable users. It turns out that 35 global heads of state use Twitter, including 84 percent of U.S. governors and every major presidential candidate. And more than 40 percent of what Twitter has classified as "top global religious leaders" are on Twitter, including @DalaiLama and the Pope, who sent his first Tweet from @news_va_en in June.
Beyond religion, humanitarians are also aboard the Twitter bandwagon -- 99 percent of America's top 200 nonprofits to be exact. Twitter noted the Red Cross's recent response to Hurricane Irene -- @redcross -- signed up lists of official volunteers to assist in four-hour shifts to disseminate the latest information to those affected by the storm.

On the athletic front, every team in the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and MLS tweets. Two-thirds of NBA players are on Twitter.
Entertainers are a given for the micro-blogging service. Eighty-seven percent of Billboard's Top 100 musicians of 2010 are active on Twitter, along with each of the top 50 Nielsen-rated TV shows and plenty of comedians.
Of course, no numerical survey of Twitter would be complete without a look at how reporters are using Twitter. After all, there's been so much talk about how citizen journalists are beating traditional reporters to the punch.
Major newsrooms from @AJEnglish to @WashingtonPost actively use Twitter to supplement their reporting efforts, Twitter noted. And ordinary citizens break news, like the now-famous Space Shuttle image that was retweeted over 2,300 times, and the first photo of the US Airways plane that landed in the Hudson River in 2009.

Falling science satellite poses little risk, NASA says

  • A 6.3-ton NASA science satellite, decommissioned in 2005, is expected to plunge into Earth's atmosphere later this month, breaking up in a shower of debris. Experts said today they expect 26 components, the largest weighing more than 330 pounds, to survive re-entry heating to hit the surface somewhere between 57 degrees north and south latitude.
But a NASA space debris expert said the threat to the public is minimal and that statistically, the odds are good the debris will land in an ocean or some other sparsely populated area.

We looked at those 26 pieces and how big they are and we've looked at the fact they can hit anywhere in the world between 57 north and 57 south and we looked at what the population density of the world is," said Nick Johnson, chief scientist with NASA's Orbital Debris Program at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.
"Numerically, it comes out to a chance of 1 in 3,200 that one person anywhere in the world might be struck by a piece of debris. Those are obviously very, very low odds that anybody's going to be impacted by this debris."
The centerpiece of a $750 million mission, the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, or UARS, was launched from the shuttle Discovery in September 1991. The solar-powered satellite was designed to address a wide variety of atmospheric questions, including the depletion of Earth's ozone layer 15 to 30 miles up, a trend blamed on the release of man-made chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, used in refrigerants, foam products, and various solvents.
The long-lived satellite was decommissioned in 2005 and one side of its orbit was lowered using the last of its fuel to hasten re-entry. No more fuel is available for maneuvering and the satellite's re-entry will be "uncontrolled."
Air Force Maj. Michael W. Duncan, deputy chief of space situational awareness with U.S. Strategic Command at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., said it is too early to predict exactly when--or where--UARS might fall.
"Late September is the best estimate we can give right now," he said. "There are so many factors that will affect it between now and that point in time. The atmosphere changes on a daily basis, it's impossible to say how that's going to impact this re-entry.
"We do know with 99.9 percent accuracy that it will re-enter the atmosphere somewhere between 57 degrees north and 57 degrees south, which means it will be anywhere from northern Canada to southern South America. That is truly the best estimation we can give you at this point in time."
UARS was released from the shuttle Discovery into a 357-mile-high orbit inclined 57 degrees to the equator. Steadily losing altitude because of increasing atmospheric drag, the satellite's current orbit measures 152 miles by 171 miles.
Duncan said STRATCOM will track UARS with powerful radar systems and provide increasingly frequent updates as the spacecraft's altitude continues to drop and its trajectory becomes easier to predict. But even two hours before entry, the impact zone will only be known to within about 6,000 miles.

UARS is the largest U.S. satellite to fall back to Earth since the 17.5-ton Compton Gamma Ray Observatory was guided to a safe, controlled re-entry in June 2000. A 2.5-ton National Reconnaissance Office spy satellite was shot down in 2008 to prevent toxic hydrazine fuel from reaching the ground.
Johnson said no such toxic materials were part of UARS.
"Satellites re-entering is actually very commonplace," he said. "Last year, for example, we averaged over one object per day falling back uncontrolled into the atmosphere. The majority of these, of course, were very, very small, they burn up completely and no parts reach the surface of the Earth.
"On the order of one moderate-sized object, on average, falls back to Earth every week, an old intact spacecraft of intact rocket body. Some of these vehicles do have components that reach the surface of the Earth. When they do, they typically fall into an ocean area or some desolate region. Typically, we find one piece a year from one of these re-entries."
Old rocket bodies or defunct satellites as large as UARS re-enter about once per year on average.
"Last year, there were 75 metric tons of spacecraft and rocket bodies falling back to Earth in an uncontrolled manner," Johnson said. "In perspective, UARS is less than six metric tons. So it's a very small percentage of the annual re-entry of satellites.
"Finally, just to remind everyone, throughout the entire 54 years of the space age, there have been no reports of anybody in the world being injured or severely impacted by any re-entering debris."

Intel to focus on Ultrabooks, Windows 8 at forum

ntel will put its large spotlight on Ultrabook laptops and Windows 8, among other technologies, at its annual developer conference next week.
In a keynote on September 14, Mooly Eden, general manager of the PC client group at Intel, will describe the "transformation of the PC" being driven by Ultrabooks at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF), according to an overview of the forum CNET received from Intel today. IDF begins next Tuesday.

Ultrabooks are very light, very thin Windows laptops that compete with the MacBook Air. The core hardware includes Intel second-generation "Sandy Bridge" processors and solid-state drives or, in some cases, hybrid hard disk drives. Meant to emulate tablets in some respects, Ultrabooks are also designed to have instant-on capability and relatively long battery life despite their compact size .
Greg Welch, who heads Intel's Ultrabook group, is expected to lead a session titled "PC Client Platform Innovation," which covers the "shift to smaller form factor PCs which drive new consumer innovations" and "Intel's vision for...this new class of device," according to Intel's IDF Technical Session Catalog abstract.
Another Ultrabook-related session on September 13 states that "delivering [a] substantial increase in battery life mandates a brand new approach to power management in a mobile PC." Another session is entitled "Next Generation Display Technology for Ultrabook," hosted by both Intel and South Korea-based LG.
Windows 8, Microsoft's next major operating system, is also slated to received plenty of attention. A session on September 14 titled "Microsoft Windows 8 on Intel Architecture" will "provide a glimpse into the upcoming release of Microsoft's next operating system release Windows 8," according to an abstract. That session will be led by both an Intel engineer and Microsoft product managers.
And a Q&A session titled "Intel and Microsoft Windows 8" will take place on September 15.
Other sessions will include "Thunderbolt Technology Tutorial: Enabling New and Exciting Products," covering the new connection technology currently being used on Apple's MacBooks; "SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.0): Ecosystem and Emerging Device Classes," which covers the latest generation of USB technology; and "Technology Insight: Intel Next Generation Microarchitecture Codename Ivy Bridge," which discusses Intel's next generation of processors due next year.
Other topics in focus will include cloud computing and advances in such areas as "extreme-scale computing, contextual awareness, and near-threshold circuit topologies that dramatically reduce energy consumption."

Norton 2012 extends Insight to downloads

Symantec's Norton updates for 2012 launched today with the expected slate of performance improvements and interesting ancillary features and with a hint of a much stronger connection between the company's desktop and mobile offerings. The robust Norton Internet Security 2012 (download) and slimmer Norton AntiVirus 2012 (download) introduce several new features and reasonable but not amazing performance bumps.

Norton Internet Security 2012

There's now a link at the bottom of the main interface to Norton's mobile version. Next to it is a link for Norton Management, a new tool which opens in your default Web browser that allows you to use Norton remotely. This includes monitoring security status, remote add and installation, and license key renewal. However, given the growth of the mobile market, it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect a stronger connection between the two in the coming year.
One of the better new features is a change to Download Insight. This community-driven tool originally evaluated files being downloaded for security, but now it looks at their stability among other Norton users, too. There's also metered bandwidth options for people on rate-limited connections, and several interface tweaks to make the program easier on the eyes and easier to find things.
Most of the bigger improvements this time around come only to Norton Internet Security, in an attempt to up its usefulness with a bulkier feature set. One is the port of Norton 360's startup manager. If you're Windows savvy, you're probably comfortable handling that stuff by hand, but even for those in the know the Norton version makes startup changes easier to implement. Along with pulling in community ratings, you can toggle a process on or off, or delay it.
The Identity Safe has been improved, too. It now includes LastPass-styled password handling and cloud-based syncing and vaults, features that some competitors have had for a while. Google Chrome finally gets Safe Web support from Norton, but it's surprisingly not in Norton AntiVirus. While I understand the point of value-added features, this one seems an unnecessarily restrictive hit on users of the fastest-growing browser.

Fortunately, none of these changes appear to have impacted the hit on system performance. CNET Labs determined that both Norton Internet Security and Norton AntiVirus perform about the same. Independent, third-party testing organizations have also made the call that Norton continues to be one of the most effective security suites on the market.
Overall, Norton 2012 continues the "new" approach Symantec has had for the past four years, with top-shelf features and performance. And yet, it's still likely that, despite the enormous positive changes to the suite, that tough competition and prior negative reputation will continue to hinder its attempts to convince people that the leopard can change its spots.

How cell phones get their names

Welcome to Smartphones Unlocked, my new monthly column designed to explain the ins and outs of smartphones to help you better understand how they work. The world of smartphones is fast-paced and can sometimes be confusing and difficult to keep track of all the new technology in these devices, particularly if you're new to them, so if there are any topics you'd like to see covered here, please feel free to e-mail me at bonnie.cha@cnet.com.

Last month, my colleague Jessica Dolcourt wrote a great two-part series on how cell phones are born, along with some behind-the-scenes confessions from the handset designers. The articles provided a great insider's look at the cell phone design business, but there's another part that's always intrigued: how do cell phones and smartphones get their names?
In my seven years of reviewing phones, I've come across some great names and some that have come from the department of "What were they thinking?" Samsung has had its fair share of both, so for this month's column, I reached out to the handset manufacturer to shed some light on the subject. What follows is a Q&A session with Paul Golden, vice president of strategic marketing for Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile).
Golden, whose responsibilities include coming up with brand and marketing strategy for new product launches, advertising, media, consumer and in-store promotions, walked me through how the company names its cell phones and smartphones. As I've learned since starting this column, the process is much more involved than I thought, so read on to see what's in a (cell phone) name.
Question: When do you begin the process of coming up with a name for a phone? Is it during the development process? Once a phone is complete? Somewhere in between?
Golden: As you might imagine, the product naming process and protocol is not the same for every phone Samsung manufactures. I can tell you that on average, the product naming process takes about five to seven weeks to complete, starting with the initial idea brainstorm and reaching completion once our team and our respective carrier partner for that device give their final approval.

How do you come up with them? What influences the decision?
Golden: We develop a positioning statement for each product that articulates the consumer benefit and key support features. The positioning statement will act as a guideline to define the best product name.
How difficult is it coming up with a name? What challenges are there?
Golden: It is definitely a challenge to match the right name with the right product. First, we have to make sure that the product name is not already taken by a competitor or a very similar version of that product name. It can also be difficult to find a product name that has a balance between being memorable and descriptive, while also being relevant, quickly understood, and recognizable to consumers.
How long does the process take? What are the different stages and who gives the final approval?
Golden: There are typically six stages that a product will go through over a five- to seven-week period before its final name is selected and confirmed. The first phase is creative development where hundreds of names are provided from an extended brainstorm period. In the second phase, we take those potential product names to a legal pre-screen to determine possible conflicts with current or future products from our competitors and make significant cuts to the initial list.
The third stage involves taking a list of about 10 to 20 leading product name candidates to our carrier partners to get their impressions. The fourth stage moves those 10 to 20 product names into a full legal search for any conflicts or potential liabilities and risks. From there, the list is whittled down to the fifth phase, which is an even shorter list of product names that are submitted to our legal team to ensure the remaining options are defensible and legally protected.
In the sixth and final phase, one product name emerges as the selected go-to market name, complete with the legal research findings and all of that information shared with the carrier for confirmation.
Do you have a team or is there a dedicated person whose job it is to come up with names?
Golden: Samsung does have a dedicated individual whose chief responsibility is to manage the product name process through the six phases, including the feedback from our legal team and the product naming/branding counterparts at each carrier Samsung works with. It's important to note that iconic devices, such as the Galaxy S, receive more product naming attention and research and go through a more in-depth approval process with our senior executives.
Are focus groups ever involved?
Golden: Focus groups are generally not used, but we do conduct market testing research with consumers to help identify which product attributes and features would likely resonate the strongest when people are shopping for a new phone. Our ultimate goals in naming a product are driving Samsung's business and building an emotional and loyal connection with consumers.

What part do the carriers play in the naming process?
Golden: Some carriers do own product names that evolve into specific brands across multiple manufacturers, such as Verizon and its Droid brand. But more often than not, Samsung conducts the product naming process for our phones and accessories and own the intellectual rights to that product name and potential future generations of products that share all or part of a older product name.
How much influence do the OEM's have? Can you tell the carrier that you want a phone to keep its original name/branding (e.g., Samsung Galaxy S II) or if you don't agree with a name, can you push back?
Golden: Naming a product is definitely a collaborative process between Samsung and our carrier partners. Let's face it, if the carrier is a big fan of a product name that we choose to bring to market, the better our overall synergy will be with the carrier in marketing, launching and promoting the product both in advance and after retail availability begins.
How different is the naming process for the U.S. and other parts of the world? When do you change the name of the same phone for different countries?
Golden: Many of the phones that we sell in the U.S. are unique to the U.S. market. In those cases the names will also be unique. For global devices, our preference is to use common naming as much as possible in order to leverage global media. In today's media world, there are no real borders so consumers get exposed to online and social media that we do globally as well as in the U.S. The more consistent we can be in our naming globally, the better. In some cases, we may have different strategies for product branding in the U.S. than other parts of the globe.
Does Samsung check a proposed name to see what cultural or religious meanings it has in other countries or societies?
Golden: Being a global company, Samsung and our legal counsel are very sensitive and careful to avoid introducing product names that could offend consumers here in the U.S. as well as other parts of the world. That is one of the reasons that our product naming process goes through multiple waves of legal reviews. Our legal agency checks names against other languages (always Korean) to ensure there are no potential hidden meanings. The Samsung HQ intellectual property team also will ask the meaning of a name if it is a coined name, such as APTOS, which combines apt and operating system.
What are some of the legal issues you have to deal with with coming up with names?
Golden: Aside from the obvious problems associated with launching a product name that is the same as a competitor, we also have to be aware of product names that could unintentionally mislead consumers into thinking that our phone or tablet has a specific feature or capability that it does not actually possess. Also, the mobile phone product industry is growing with more manufacturers and products every day. More products in the telecom industry creates a smaller number of original product names for Samsung and our competitors to choose from.
Once you come up with a unique name, is that exclusive to Samsung? Do you own it or can other companies use them?
Golden: Once a product name is registered as Samsung's intellectual property, our rights typically extend to exclusivity among the consumer technology industry. However, other consumer product industries, from cars to food or airlines all have the ability to use a name of one of our products, as long as their legal counsel can prove there is minimal to no chance that a consumer will confuse our product with the product from a completely unrelated industry.
Why do you use the model number for some devices?
Golden: We still use numbers on some entry-level feature phones where consumers are looking more for economy and basic functionality.
