HOW CAN I PROTECT PRIVATE FOLDERS ON MY MAC?

HOW CAN I PROTECT PRIVATE FOLDERS ON MY MAC?

seems to me that the very best possible solution is for you and your sister to set up different accounts on your Mac, actually. That's one of the real benefits of Mac OS X (and, for that matter, Windows too).
You can do that by simply going to Apple --> System Preferences... -->Accounts and setting up an account for her. Then simply ensure that you log outwhen you're done with the computer each time and she won't be able to get to any of your files and you'll be safe from having her mess with your preferences, settings, etc.
No? That's not what you want to do?
Okay, I'll give you a couple of neat Terminal tricks that can help you out, one that lets you make a folder closed to everyone and another that makes it disappear completely until you make it reappear.
In both cases, you'll need to launch Applications --> Utilities --> Terminal.app. It'll start out in your account "home" directory, which you can check by typing pwd. Move to the directory where your folder or files lives by typing in cd followed by the name of the directory.
For example, if I wanted to protect a folder on the Desktop, then I'd type in cd Desktop and move there.
Now, to make a folder completely locked and unreadable, simply type in:
chmod 000 my-protected-folder
You won't get any feedback but you'll end up with something like this (pay particular attention to the "testing123" folder and how it's portrayed):
Folder protected / locked in Mac OS X
To get back in when you want to, simply go back to the same place with the "cd" command and type in:
chmod 775 my-protected-folder
To hide a folder or file completely, simply preface its name with a ".". For example, to hide "testing123" I'd rename it ".testing123":
mv testing123 ".testing123"
Wanna get that one back to normal? Go back to the same directory and type in the reverse: mv .testing123 testing123
So there you go, three possible solutions to your problem. Hope one of them works out for you!

Apple finally launches OS X Lion USB drive

Apple has launched its Mac OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive.
The drive, which is available now on Apple's Web site, retails for $69. Users who buy the drive can simply pop it into their computers and install Mac OS X Lion without the need for a Web connection.
Apple announced its USB thumb drive last month. The company said that it would be the right choice for customers that don't have a broadband connection in the home. But it also signals Apple's future plans.

Finally: a USB mouse that doubles as a digital scale

Need to measure small amounts of substances in the privacy of your home? This mouse/scale hybrid may be your solution.
I’m not sure what’s going on with optical mice nowadays, but its strange. Not long after Canon announced its mouse-calculator hybrid, this USB-digital scale has also made its appearance. Capable of measuring weights from 0.1g to 500g, the scale’s range of use seem fairly limited - assuming, that is, you don’t work in the drug or jewelry industries. But, assuming you do work in the drug or jewelry industries, would you trust your trade to the numbers given to you by a $22 mouse scale? I’d certainly hope not.
But the above mouse isn’t alone. I did a bit of research and found a number of other products that are pretty much the same thing. There’s the MSC-650 Optical USB Mouse Scale from AmericanWeigh and this “Optical mouse with hidden digital scale and stash compartment.” Notably, Amazon notes that buyers of the former also purchased products like clear reclosable zipper bags and wall clock/hidden safe combinations. Suddenly, the target demographic for these things seems a lot more clear.

Free Anti-virus For Mac Computers

Mac computers have always had the reputation of being secure. Some would call it security through obscurity, meaning Macs are not as big a target as PCs because they hold a smaller share of the computing marketplace. While some of that might be true, it’s not impossible for threats or exploits to compromise your Mac computer. But are they such a threat you need to spend a lot of money on anti-virus software? Probably not.
There is a free anti-virus solution for Macs, however.

Download Free Mac Anti-virus

Sophos offers free Mac anti-virus that’s worth a look. If you have always wondered if you needed protection for your Mac, then you understand how important it is to keep your computer safe.  Threats are out there–it’s a fact. Whether or not they are actively targeting the Mac OS is debatable. At this point, a free anti-virus solution is prudent. You can download Sophos Anti-virus for Mac Home Edition here.
Install Sophos by opening the installer package.

The install process is pretty straight-forward. Click continue, then read and agree to their terms of use. Sophos will quickly check their servers for updates, then ask which destination drive you want it installed on. The installation is under 200MB.

When the installation completes, you should notice a black shield in your menu bar. Sophos will monitor your computer and scan files as you open them. You should probably run a manual scan following installation. To do so, click the black shield in your menu bar and select Scan Local Drives.

Share Files Between A Mac and A PC

Many homes and offices have a hybrid computer environment, meaning both Macs and PCs are being used. Setting up network shares between the two is not very difficult, but certain options must be turned on to allow a Mac computer and a PC to see file shares. The following tutorial will explain what to setting to enable. In Windows Vista and Windows 7 you will turn on File and Print Sharing and then choose which folders to share.
Network Discovery
Configure Windows sharing options in Windows 7 to share files with a Mac
To do this in Windows 7, go to the Control Panel and Open the Network and Internet section. Next, click on the Network and Sharing Center. In the left column, select the Change Advanced Sharing Settings link.
This brings up the global settings for your current profile. Click the options to Turn on network discovery, Turn on file and printer sharing, and Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the Public folders.
This allows access for anyone who can see the Public folder on your Windows machine. You can add additional folders within that directory for organization.
On a Mac, you will setup sharing by clicking on Preferences (Apple logo > System Preferences) and then by clicking the Sharing icon.

Check the services you want to share in the left column, and then select the Shared Folders and the Users you want to allow access to those shares. If you want to grant anyone on the network access to the shared folders, select Everyone in the Users section. You can then choose if you wan to grant Read Only privileges or Read & Write privileges to those users.
Next, click Options in the File Sharing section.
Share files using SMB
Share files and folders using SMB (Windows)
To share files with Windows users, check the Share files and folders using SMB (Windows) box.
In addition to using shared folders, you can set up a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device. A NAS will allow users to access files when other computers are not on. Mapping a network drive to a NAS and using that mapped drive is an efficient way to share between many different network devices.
