Infographic: Who's making the move to Windows 8?

Whether to make the move to Windows 8 is a huge question facing companies right now. TechRepublic conducted an independent survey of over 1,100 tech pros to see where they are on this decision. Here are a few data points from the survey. The entire survey and a discussion of its results, including the reasons companies give for upgrading or not upgrading,  will be released next week.

Samsung To Cut The Cord, End LCD Panel Supply Relationship With Apple

Samsung told The Korea Times on Monday that it will end its LCD panel supply relationship with Apple as of next year. That’s according to a “senior Samsung source” who declined to be identified, citing insufficient margins owing to Apple’s supply pricing strategy. Samsung’s role in Apple’s LCD supply chain has dwindled, with the Korean company reportedly cut out of iPad mini production, but Samsung’s decision to pull the plug may have been a pre-emptive strike by the parts manufacturer owing to a declining relationship between the two.
Samsung is said to be fielding more orders from its consumer electronics division, as well as from Apple competitor Amazon, in volumes that could make up for the loss of Apple as an LCD component customer. Apple was Samsung’s top customer according to NPD DisplaySearch for the first half of the year, but Apple began cutting its LCD orders back in September and was reportedly shifting order volumes to LG and Sharp, as ongoing patent disputes worsened.
Pricing on Apple’s latest iPad display had caused Samsung to earn only half as much per pixel on its production compared to previous models, so narrowing margins clearly had an impact on the decision, but this also can’t help but look like a case of Samsung ending a relationship that was already on the rocks to begin with. Apple was already clearly trying to reduce its reliance on its rival’s component supplier arm, as indicated by changes to the way it designs its processor andsources RAM and NAND flash chips, but this may accelerate Apple’s intended timeline.
Apple is a massive customer of LCD panels, and is set to become an even more demanding customer with the impending probable launch of the iPad mini. Earlier, there were concerns about whether or not Samsung’s display supplier competition could produce adequate volumes to satisfy its needs, butSharp seems to have recently gotten its act together, and others like Sony have reportedly joined Apple’s stable of potential supply sources.
The question will be whether or not the timeline Samsung gave of next year will give Apple enough time to stabilize its alternate source. Still, it looks like both have been preparing for this moment for a while, so we could see each walk away relatively unscathed.

Amazon 10-Inch Kindle Fire May be Delayed

amazon may hold off on announcing a 10-inch Kindle Fire at a press event next week, instead focusing on tablets that are smaller than Apple's iPad.
Although a 10-inch Kindle Fire has been expected since last year, All Things Digital reports that the tablet is “definitely not a done deal,” citing several anonymous sources. However, Amazon could still announce a version with an 8-inch or slightly larger screen, in addition to a revamped 7-inch Kindle Fire.
This isn't the first we've heard of a medium-sized Kindle Fire tablet. Last year, Digitimes reported that Amazon was preparing an 8.9-inch Kindle Fire, and last month, Staples US Retail President Demos Parneros said to expect five or six Amazon tablets, which could leave room for something in the 8-inch range.
I'll be a bit disappointed if Amazon doesn't announce a 10-inch Kindle Fire at its press event. Cheap 10-inch tablets are hard to come by unless you're willing to buy last year's hardware. If previousspeculation is accurate, a large Kindle Fire would likely be inexpensive, while also offering specs on par with the latest devices, such as a quad-core processor.

But if the device isn't ready, a delayed launch is for the best. After all, the original Kindle Fire suffered from buggy, sluggish software at launch, along with some hardware design quirks, which in turn resulted in lukewarm reviews. If Amazon plans to challenge the iPad head-on, it needs to take the time to get it right.
In the meantime, the company may feel that it can claim some new territory with a slightly smaller Kindle Fire. We've seen a few tablets with 8.9-inch screens over the last year or so, includingSamsung's Galaxy Tab 8.9 and LG's T-Mobile G-Slate, but none have proven particularly popular.
One other interesting tidbit from All Things Digital's report: Sources say to expect some sort of mobile broadband connectivity option for Amazon's new tablets, but how that will work is unclear. Amazon already sells e-readers with 3G connectivity, but doesn't allow Web browsing over mobile networks for newer models. Short of some radical new approach to wireless tablet data, we may Amazon go the traditional route and require users to sign up for data plans.

NEW 'GAUSS' VIRUS TARGETS FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS

(Agence France-Presse) A new “state-sponsored” cyber surveillance virus dubbed “Gauss” has stolen passwords and key data from thousands of bank users in the Middle East, the top IT security firm Kaspersky Lab said Thursday.
According to Kaspersky, Gauss was a complete and “complex, nation-state sponsored cyber-espionage toolkit,” which aims to steal sensitive data, with a specific focus on browser passwords and online banking account details.
It has similarities to Stuxnet and Flame, the Russian company said in a statement, noting that although the new malware program was discovered in June 2012 it appears to have been in use since September 2011.

Google Wallet now accepts multiple cards

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Google just took your phone a step closer to replacing your wallet in the mobile payment revolution.

The company expanded its mobile payments platform, Google Wallet, to accept multiple credit cards. Users can now connect their Visa (V,Fortune 500), MasterCard (MA, Fortune 500), American Express (AXP, Fortune 500), or Discover (DFS, Fortune 500) cards with the new version of Google Wallet. It's an update from the company's previous partnership with MasterCard, Citigroup and Sprint.

Instead of swiping a card, users enter their card info into the service and are able to tap their phones at venues accepting Google Wallet payments. It's a step forward for the company looking to delve into the mobile payment realm - an increasingly crowded space.
The latest update also provides a cloud-based version of the app -- a move Google (GOOG, Fortune 500) hopes will provide more security for users. The feature allows users to remotely disable Google Wallet if a phone is lost or stolen.

Google Wallet only works on near-field communication (NFC) -enabled devices, and is limited to Sprint (S, Fortune 500), Virgin Mobile devices and the Nexus 7 tablet.
There are now twenty-five national retailers -- from Macy's (M, Fortune 500) to Duane Reade -- accepting Google's mobile payment app and according to Google's post about the update, 200,000 locations where people can use Google Wallet.
While it's a step forward, Google admits it still has a long way to go. Most people haven't ditched their wallets for smartphones and several phones on the market don't have NFC capability, which is integral for Google Wallet.
"Changing behavior is very difficult," Robin Dua, who heads product management for Google Wallet, told CNNMoney. "This evolution will require retailers and issuers to make changes, and it's going to take some time."
But Dua says the process has started. The product manager pointed out that smartphones manufactured with NFC chips are becoming standard.

Zuckerberg to Wall Street: No need to unfriend us yet

Zuckerberg to Wall Street: No need to unfriend us yet

Wall Street analysts wanted more details than Facebook's top team would share. Management's response: Trust us.

Mark Zuckerberg with COO Sheryl Sandberg
(Credit: Dan Farber)
On Facebook's conference call with analysts today, CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his top lieutenants repeatedly stressed that they plan to take their time rolling out more ads on mobile devices to avoid angering users.
And in doing so, they are angering Wall Street.
After Facebook posted unspectacular results for its second quarter -- its first report as a public company -- management offered few details about what to expect in coming months.
The absence of specificity came as a disappointment to Facebook watchers. Citigroup's Mark Mahaney said that while the results shouldn't be viewed either "as dramatically good or bad," he said that key questions remained -- in particular, the future of Facebook's mobile monetization as well as the future of Facebook's user engagement.
But the little that Facebook did say proved unsettling. While Facebook continues to grow its user base and average revenue per user (ARPU), most of that growth is outside the U.S., where the company makes far less money on each user than it does in North America. Another worry for investors: COO David Ebersman said that ad impressions are down overall, largely because more users are accessing Facebook on mobile devices.
The result was brutal: Facebook stock, which fell more than 8 percent in regular trading, skidded another 11 percent after hours, leaving a share of Facebook at just below $24 a share. That's a roughly 37 percent drop from the $38 dollars a share offering price set for its May IPO.

Such is the bind that the newly-public Facebook has put itself in. Investors -- burned by the company's ugly IPO and subsequent lousy stock performance -- wanted a clear road map pointing where Facebook is going as it tries to squeeze more money out of its 955 million users.
Not surprisingly, Zuckerberg wasn't playing along. For Facebook watchers, he offered more evidence that this was a CEO marching to his own drummer, more interested in product than on pleasing the short-term focus of myriad Wall Street suits.
"I don't have any more plans that I'm going to share with you about our product road map," the 28-year-old CEO and founder said during the call.
What followed was almost kabuki-like. Again and again, analysts wanted to know more about Facebook's efforts making money from mobile. The answer, given in different ways from Zuckerberg -- as well as COO Sheryl Sandberg and Ebersman -- was that Facebook was making progress but that it's being methodical and taking its time to make sure it gets it right.
"We're not TV. We're not search. We're a new medium," Sandberg said at one point, a colorful quote that may not mollify the skeptics who just want to see stronger growth.
In the near-term, Facebook is counting on the power of social ads on mobile phones, called Sponsored Stories. These are ads that show up on News Feeds of a brand's fans and their friends.
Sponsored Stories in the News Feed are the "cornerstone of our mobile strategy," said Sandberg, who pointed out that they're also the most relevant for advertisers.
And on paper, at least, the potential is huge. Facebook disclosed that around 543 million people use its mobile services and that those folks are 20 percent more likely than desktop users to be active consumers of various services on the site. What's more, there is evidence that socialads are more effective than desktop ads, but, as the execs pointed out, it is still early. Facebook only began letting advertisers buy mobile-only sponsored stories in June.
Here was an area where Sandberg did share some numbers not in the press release. By the end of June, she said, sponsored stories in News Feeds were generating more than $1 million a day, with half of that coming from mobile. But while she said that Facebook planned a bigger push behind sponsored stories in 2012, nobody should expect an overnight success.
"We're still in the early days of building our monetization engine," she said.
With about $10.2 billion in its vaults, Facebook can afford to take the long view. Even as the pressure steps up in coming months.

Historic Facebook debut falls short of expectations

Historic Facebook debut falls short of expectations

By Alexei Oreskovic

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The historic initial public offering of Facebook Inc did not go as planned on Friday, as the social networking company's sky-high valuation combined with trading glitches left the stock languishing near its offering price at the market close.
Facebook shares, which opened up 11 percent, closed at $38.23 after a nail-biting last half hour of trading when the shares dipped to their $38 IPO price. Most investors had predicted a first-day pop.
More than 576 million shares changed hands, setting a trading volume record for U.S. market debuts.
The company had priced its IPO at the top end of its target range and increased the size of the offering, becoming the first U.S. company to go public with a valuation greater than $100 billion.
Facebook founder and Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg, 28, who retains voting control of the company and whose personal net worth is now about $20 billion, marked the debut of his company's shares at the company's Silicon Valley campus, symbolically ringing the opening bell for stock trading on Friday morning.
Wearing his trademark black hoodie, Zuckerberg hugged and high-fived Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook's chief operating officer, who is credited with bringing crucial business discipline to a company founded in a Harvard dorm room eight years ago.
The area outside Facebook's offices was packed with throngs of photographers, more than a dozen television trucks, and a TV news helicopter hovering overhead.
Outside of Nasdaq headquarters in New York, crowds also gathered, even as exchange officials struggled to sort out technical problems related to the huge volume of orders, which delayed the start of trading in the stock by 45 minutes and left investors guessing for more than two hours about whether their buy and sell orders had actually been executed.
The shares attracted interest from investors of all stripes, reflecting the social network's extraordinary growth and deep store of information about its 900 million users.
The IPO minted thousands of new paper millionaires among Facebook's 3,500 employees -- and a handful of billionaires among its founders and early investors.
But the stock debut took place in a weak market, and traders said the smaller-than-expected first-day pop reflected the very aggressive pricing of the offering and a last-minute, near 25 percent increase in the number of shares being sold. Analyst predictions of first-day gains had ranged from 10 percent to 50 percent.
"The increase in size was a big negative factor for us," said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment officer at Solaris Asset Management, who said he canceled some orders for the shares.
The IPO price was equivalent to more than 100 times historical earnings, compared with Apple Inc's 14 times and Google Inc's 19 times. For many investors that made it a risky bet.
"We have got some unhappy guys out there," said Wayne Kaufman, chief market strategist at John Thomas Financial, a retail broker on Wall Street. "They were hoping for Facebook to be considerably better. I bet there are a lot of disappointed people in the market."
Market participants said that in the final run-up to the IPO, much of the demand was from retail investors rather than institutions. When the stock fell to $38 on Friday morning, traders say the IPO's lead underwriter Morgan Stanley stepped in to prevent the price from slipping below the IPO level.
From Facebook's perspective, a small increase in the stock showed it was priced perfectly for Zuckerberg and early investors, who pocketed maximum gains and left little of the easy money on the table.
"You want to price the offering correctly. Institutional buyers get a little bump and the company raises the right amount of money," said Kevin Hartz, co-founder and CEO of Eventbrite, an online ticketing startup that is integrated with Facebook's platform. "If the stock has a massive bump on day one that means you misread market demand and company does not raise the right amount of money."
BATTLE OF THE GIANTS
Facebook faces many challenges as it takes its place beside Google, Apple and Amazon.com Inc as one of the giant public companies defining the next-generation Internet economy. Google in particular views Facebook as a mortal threat and is moving aggressively to integrate social networking features across its products.
At the same time, scores of young companies are building new products and services, in some cases on top of the Facebook platform and in some cases in competition with it, and attracting huge amounts of investment capital.
A handful of such so-called Web 2.0 companies, including Zynga Inc, LinkedIn Corp, Yelp Inc and Groupon Inc, have already gone public, and others have been acquired by the industry giants.
In a sign of the volatile nature of highly valued Internet stocks, all these shares fell on Friday in sympathy with Facebook's weaker-than-expected debut. In particular, social gaming company Zynga, which relies on heavily on Facebook and also provides more than 10 percent of Facebook's revenues, fell by more than 14 percent.
In an indication of the land grab now under way in the Internet world, Facebook in April spent $1 billion to acquire Instagram, a tiny photo-sharing company with lots of users but no revenue. A Facebook rival, social scrap-booking site Pinterest, raised money earlier this week at a valuation of $1.5 billion in a sign that venture capitalists and other private investors still see enormous potential in Web 2.0 companies.
Facebook's formidable assets include 900 million users around the world, many of whom spend hours a day on the site and share enormous amounts of personal information. That in turn enables Facebook to target its advertising to peoples' specific interests, and many analysts believe the huge store of personal information gives Facebook an advantage that Google and other cannot match.
"Literally everything you see on the Internet, you could see inside Facebook -- but done with much more of the social graph built into it," said Siva Kumar, CEO of e-commerce company TheFind. "In a way they operate the mall, and everybody in the mall will pay some way or the other to Facebook."
Facebook posted $3.7 billion in revenue in 2011 and $1 billion in profit. Analysts say the company has untapped opportunities in mobile computing, and potentially other Internet services such as email and search. Zuckerberg, though unproven as a public company CEO, is widely admired as a product visionary who has done a masterful job in continually improving the Facebook experience.
Skeptics, though, note that only a small percentage of Facebook users respond to advertising on the site. Google retains a big advantage in that regard, because advertising related to specific Internet searches is by nature far more relevant and thus more valuable.
In a sign of the challenges ahead for Facebook, the nation's third-largest advertiser, General Motors Co, said last week that it was canceling its paid advertising on the site.
Global Equities analyst Trip Chowdhry said the stock debut was "lackluster" because Facebook's growth prospects do not justify a high stock valuation. "They have serious technology and business model problems. Facebook is overhyped and drinking its own Kool-Aid," he said. "They are only getting $4.39 per user per year. Google gets almost $30 per user."
In Silicon Valley, though, the conventional wisdom is that Facebook and its social media brethren will be an increasingly important force in the business world for many years to come.
Already, the influx of wealth arising from Facebook's extraordinary growth has helped drive a mini-boom in San Francisco Bay Area real estate, and income tax revenues related to the IPO will cut the state of California's budget deficit by an estimated $2 billion.
