Google+ Gains Nearly 10 Million Users In First 2 Days Of Being Open To The Public

A Google+ post by Paul Allen, founder of ancestry.com and a self-proclaimed “unofficial Google+ statistician, shows significant growth of Google’s social network since opening to the public.   These growth rates were only first seen during the first few weeks of field testing when the user numbers were very low.  In terms of the current growth spurt Allen states:
“it is clear that Google+ is absolutely exploding — 30% growth in just 2 days and with a base of nearly 30 million members already.”

His previous Google+ users estimate was 28.7 Million users on September 9th a number that has increased to 43.3 million  current users.  He also stated that “most of the growth coming in the last 2 days.”
So what does this mean? Google+ may be cementing themselves as a credible social network, but the mass exodus from Facebook just isn’t happening. Facebook is still the powerhouse network with 800 million+ users and all of the layout complaints aren’t adding up to astounding departure numbers … yet.
Other notable Google+ timeline stats are:
  • Over 1 million mark (1.7 million) – 7/4
  • 4.5 million user mark – 7/10/11
  • 10 million user mark – 7/12/11

Is Netflix even worth it anymore?

As Netflix hikes prices and tweaks its content to add more TV programming, some avid fans are wondering if they should cancel their subscriptions.

Netflix has already lost some customers due to the abrupt price hike in July. The newly announced plan to separate the streaming service from the DVD-by-mail service may also cause other customers to flee. And then there was more disruptive news this week, as a company executive acknowledged that movie content, the bread and butter of the Netflix offering, is getting too expensive for streaming. Instead the company will focus more attention on getting rights to TV programming.
It seems like at every turn, Netflix is pushing its loyal customers away. In this week's Ask Maggie I help a fellow cable cord-cutter determine whether Netflix's $8 streaming fee is still worth it.
I also help another reader figure out how to maneuver in the tricky world of cell phone upgrades.
Ask Maggie is an advice column that answers readers' wireless and broadband questions. The column now appears twice a week on CNET, offering readers a double dose of Ask Maggie's advice. If you have a question, I'd love to hear from you. Please send me an e-mail at maggie dot reardon at cbs dot com. And please put "Ask Maggie" in the subject header.

Is Netflix worth it?

Dear Maggie,
I recently cut my cable cord to save some money. I use a Roku box for all my TV needs. I subscribe to Netflix primarily for movies and documentaries. And I have a Hulu Plus account so I can watch recent and current TV shows.
I read your article from earlier this week that Netflix is going to focus on acquiring more TV content instead of getting more movies. Anyway, movies are exactly what I want from Netflix. I used to really love Netflix, and now I'm annoyed. They've increased the price of the service, but I'm going to get less of what I want. Also, if Netflix is focusing more on acquiring TV content, won't it pretty much have all the same stuff that Hulu Plus has? I'm already a Hulu Plus subscriber, so why should I pay for both? And what are my alternatives for access to movies as Netflix adds more TV content?
Thanks,
Angela
Dear Angela,
Let me start by saying that you and I are in the same boat. I canceled my cable service last winter. And like you, I rely on Roku as my "cable box," offering me access to content on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon streaming. In addition to my Netflix and Hulu Plus subscriptions, I have an Amazon Prime subscription, so I also get access to some movies and TV content from there, too.
Until Netflix changed its pricing, I subscribed to the $15-a-month plan that gave me unlimited streaming and two DVDs. I pay $8 a month for Hulu Plus. And the Amazon Prime membership, which also gives me free two-day shipping on items ordered from Amazon, is $80 for the year or about $6.67 a month. That comes to a total TV spend of $30 a month. Even with Netflix's price hike, which now means I pay $5 more a month, I'm still only paying $35 a month compared to the more than $100 I was paying for cable TV.
There's no question that this is still a bargain. But I think you bring up a very good point. As Netflix changes its content acquisition strategy, is it really worth it?
When I first cut the cord, I used the Netflix streaming service mostly to watch movies and to catch up on past seasons of certain TV shows. Hulu Plus was where I went to watch the current season of my favorite TV shows. And Amazon I rarely used because everything available for free using my Amazon Prime membership was already offered through either Netflix or Hulu.
My biggest complaint about Netflix has always been that it lacks quality movies for streaming. I understand that a lot of newer movies aren't offered as part of the streaming service. I can accept that. But what's more frustrating is that its streaming catalog is clogged with hundreds of really crappy B-list and C-list movies. More often than not, highly acclaimed movies are not available on the streaming service, even if they're several years old.
My guess is that I am not the only person who uses and views these various streaming services this way. So what value does Netflix add if it stops acquiring more movie titles and instead adds more TV content? To be honest, I'm not sure I have the answer yet.
Netflix CFO David Wells said at the Goldman Sachs conference this week, where he talked about this strategy, that Netflix customers are more interested in getting good-quality content, regardless of whether it comes from TV or a movie studio. And I agree with this to an extent. If it's quality programming, I'll watch it.
But Netflix must continue to offer a differentiated service. Up until now, that differentiation has come from the larger movie catalog and the fact you don't have to suffer through commercials.
As it adds more TV content, Netflix risks competing more directly with Hulu. And that could be dangerous. Netflix and Hulu already have some overlap in terms of content.
But they've each tried to carve out their own niche in how they're offering that content. For example, Netflix and Hulu Plus each offer the TV show 30 Rock. On Netflix I can watch the most recent season, sans commercials. And I can also watch all previous seasons back-to-back.
Meanwhile, Hulu, which inserts short commercials that cannot be skipped, only offers me the most recent season of 30 Rock. Still, the advantage Hulu offers me is that I can watch the current season of the show. I just have to wait until the day after it airs on regular TV to stream it.
If Netflix continues this existing delivery mode, then it could be enough to keep subscribers on the service. But if the company starts monkeying with how many seasons it makes available and when people can view them, it risks losing my business.
So for now, I am going to keep my Netflix service. It doesn't offer me everything I want, but it offers me enough to pay $20 a month for DVDs in the mail for the latest movies plus unlimited streaming for content that's available on that service.
Now for the second part of your question: Where can you get access to more movies? There are other services you can access through your Roku box that also stream movies. Hulu has started offering some movies. Its catalog is not as extensive as Netflix's, but it does have some movies. Amazon streaming also offers movies. Unfortunately, what's offered for free as part of the Amazon Prime membership is similar to what's offered on Netflix and Hulu. But you can get newer movies and even great older movies that aren't available on Netflix or Hulu for rent or purchase on Amazon.
And there are other ways to get movies, but it might require that you buy a different box, gaming console, or hook up a PC to your TV. For example, Apple TV, which costs about $100, offers movies and TV shows through Apple's iTunes store.
Movies can also be purchased through Google's Android Market for use on some Android smartphones and tablets.
Wal-Mart has a streaming service it calls Vudu, which is offered on the PlayStation 3, Boxee, iPad, and Windows-based PCs, allows people to rent movies for between $1 and $5. It also offers some titles the same day they're released on DVD, unlike other services that require waiting periods.
And then there are streaming services that are available through paid TV subscriptions. There's a service called Epix on the Roku box that's offered to paid TV subscribers on Charter, Cox Communications, Dish Network, Mediacom, Verizon FiOS, and some Insight and NCTC subscribers. But its catalog is similar to Netflix's catalog.
Dish is also expected to announce a movie streaming service with Blockbuster later today. Like the Epix service, the Dish/Blockbuster streaming service will likely be available for Dish satellite TV subscribers. But the company may offer a standalone service for non-Dish subscribers in the future. And that service could offer a viable competitor to Netflix. Stay tuned for more details on that.
What all this means for cord cutters like you and me is that for the widest and best selection of movies, we'll likely have to rely on DVDs. So you may not want to cancel that Netflix, or should I say Qwikster, subscription just yet.

Confusion in smartphone upgrade discounts

Dear Maggie,
I have a family plan with three lines all with "dumb" phones. My wife and I have data plans ($10) and text plans ($5) on our phones. We both have the LG ENV Touch. And the third line has just the basic service. My wife is looking to upgrade to an iPhone 5 and I thought since we got our phones at the same time, we would both be eligible for an upgrade. However, when I log on to the Web site it says that we are all eligible for upgrades, but only my line can receive the subsidized price for a phone. The other lines must pay full price if they want to upgrade.
This seems unfair to me since I would be asked to pay the full price for service and a data plan on each of these lines if I were to upgrade both to a smartphone. The main issue here is that I'm not the one looking for a smartphone, so I don't need the upgrade. I'm happy using my LG phone, because I actually use my phone for calls, not Web surfing on a tiny screen. I use my iPad2 with Verizon 3G service for that instead.
Is there a way to get the discount for both of our lines if I did want to pursue an upgrade to a smartphone for us both? Or if that isn't an option, apply the discount for my line to hers? Our contract is up in January.
Thanks,
Cisco
Dear Cisco,
Let me start by saying you are free to upgrade your cell phones whenever you like. You can buy a new phone every week of your contract. But only the first one you buy when you sign up for the service will be at the discounted and subsidized price. After that, you have to pay full price for whichever device you want.
Verizon Wireless has long had one of the most confusing discounted upgrade policies of any wireless carrier. And to make matters worse, it changed its policy to "simplify" things in January. So now there are customers, like you, who signed up for service before January 16, who are subject to one policy. And customers who signed up after January 16 who are subject to a different policy.
The old upgrade and device discount policy allowed subscribers to get a subsidized price on devices early. Depending on how much you spend on your monthly service, you could get a discounted price on a new phone a year before your contract expires. But if you have a family plan, only the primary line is eligible for the early upgrade.
Under the new policy, there are no early upgrades. And every customer is eligible for a new phone at a discounted price 20 months into a two-year contract.
What has likely happened in your situation is that your account is eligible for an upgrade discount, but because it's a family plan, only the primary line can get the discount. The other lines will have to wait until their individual contracts expire to get the discounted price on new phones.
So you have two options. The first option is you and your wife can just wait. You said that your contract expires in January. So at that time, your wife will be eligible for the new iPhone 5 at what ever discounted price Verizon is offering. And considering that this new iPhone hasn't even been announced yet, it might not be too much of a burden to wait.
But if she really, really needs the new iPhone the month is comes out, you can buy the device at the discounted price and activate it on your line. And then you can call customer service and have the iPhone switched to her line. Keep in mind that this will extend your contract an additional two years and not her contract, since your line is the one that is being upgraded with the phone discount.
I hope this helps and good luck.

Yes, Google really should worry about Facebook

The algorithm is the key to success.
That's how Google replaced Yahoo as the Web's best search engine in 1998. Google became the font of the online world's information by both finding more information online than any other search engine, and by figuring out what of it was the most important to the Web's users. Google algorithmically connected the Web to people.
Facebook, by contrast, has always been about connecting people to each other, but as the the latest version of the Facebook platform illustrates, the company is now about using that information to do what Google has traditionally done: connect people not just to each other, but to things, ideas, and media.
The algorithm is a big part of today's announcement at the F8 developers' conference. The algorithm can determine what you're likely to like based on who you like, what you do, where you go, which apps you use (and how), and so forth--all of which is information that Facebook will now collect through its own service and all the apps that are being built to run on it.
Mark Zuckerberg describes how Facebook will connect people to media based on the strengths of their connections to other people.
(Credit: James Martin/CNET)
Google also knows what you do online, but it doesn't have close to the same depth of personal information that Facebook has, for two reasons. First, Google's core service, search, is a way station, not a destination. Google knows where you're going because you transit the site and because you may be tipping it off through your browser's search bar or through ads on the sites you visit. But Facebook is a destination. People go to Facebook and stay there. And communicate. And like. And so on. All the while, Facebook collects the data.
Second, Facebook knows who your friends are. In addition to the fact that you tell it this when you "friend" people, how and with whom you communicate on the site is more data that Facebook's algorithm can use to classify your connections to other people. When you respond to what Facebook is now calling "lightweight engagement" activities in the Ticker--when you decide to listen to a song alongside a friend, for example--Facebook files away this information, building, bit by bit, a dossier on your preferences and the people who are most likely to influence you.
For advertisers, this data is more valuable than Google's. Facebook will be able to cluster likely interest groups together and sell marketers access to those people. The company will be able to work with media companies to make advertising on their pages more effective. This is a serious and credible threat to Google's position as the Web's premier advertising provider.
For users, Facebook will, probably quickly, learn what each of us is likely to like by watching what we do on the site. This will help solve a big problem on a Web overloaded with novel information: discovery. By mining the "data exhaust" collected from the activities, links, likes, and so on that we all generate, Facebook should be able to predict, with increasing accuracy, what we're most likely to engage with, be it music or grocery ingredients.

If Facebook gets this wrong, users will continue to complain about the new design of the site as being too cluttered and confusing. But if the algorithm starts to feed people links to things they like but didn't know they'd like, it means the algorithm is working and Facebook is on its way to becoming the source of the most valuable information on the Web: who likes what, who they influence, and how to reach the people most likely to influence others (hint: go through their friends).
It's scary to see one single company own this database, but Facebook is coating this pill in sweet candy. We will find music we love through it. We will connect with friends to go on hikes with it. We will learn things from publications using Facebook because we see our friends reading them. And we'll make the whole thing easier for our friends, and Facebook itself. But stuffing Timelines full of personal resumes of preferences and activities.
There will likely be privacy missteps along the way, as Facebook turns on the algorithm and makes the data available to more developers through its platform. One might be tempted to step away from Facebook or to try hard to not engage with the flow of attractive links and media that comes through it. But I think it's going to be hard for people to say no to what Facebook will soon be offering.

iPhone 5 to debut Oct. 4

Apple will debut its iPhone 5 on October 4, with new Chief Executive Tim Cook leading the show, All Things Digital reported today.
The report, citing unnamed sources close to the situation, said the new iPhone itself would go on sale "within a few weeks" of the announcement.
Rumors have swirled for months about when exactly the new iPhone would arrive, with October looking increasingly likely.
The iPhone 5 carries tremendous significance for Apple. The company faces mounting pressure from the Android realm, with a confusing array of budget-minded and high-end models, but Apple chooses to put many its eggs in many fewer baskets. That's worked out well for the iPhone 4, though, which has attained mainstream success.
The iPhone 4 has held up well under the competitive pressure. But with the breakneck pace of the smartphone market bringing higher-speed LTE networks, larger displays, NFC payments, and other features, Apple's flagship phone is starting to look a bit long in the tooth.
The iPhone is important for many other companies besides Apple. Manufacturer Foxconn is said to be making 150,000 iPhone 5 models a day. Accessory makers, too, are champing at the bit, as exhibited by Case-Mate's premature publication of apparent iPhone 5 cases.

Purported cases for the iPhone show a possible tapered back compared to the blockier iPhone 4 design.

new features added to google plus

For our international readers, this post is also available in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish (Latin America, Spain). - Ed.

The Google+ project has been in field trial for just under 90 days, and in that time we’ve made 91 different improvements (many of which are posted here). Google+ is still in its infancy, of course, but we’re more excited than ever to bring the nuance and richness of real-life sharing to software. Today we’re releasing nine more features that get us that much closer.

+Hangouts: more places, more people, more to do

Hangouts uses live video to bring people together, face-to-face-to-face. And from day one, the community has shaped and stretched the feature in amazing ways—from cooking classes to game shows to music concerts. We're determined to keep this momentum going, and to keep providing new ways to communicate in-person, so we hope you enjoy this week’s round of Hangouts improvements.

92. Hangouts on your phone
In life we connect with others in all sorts of places, at all different times. And the connections you make unexpectedly are often the ones you remember the most. We think Hangouts should keep pace with how you socialize in the real-world, so today we’re launching it on the one device that's always by your side: your mobile phone. To get started, simply find an active hangout in the Stream, and tap “Join”:

Hangouts on your phone: Stream View (left), Green Room (center), Portrait Mode (right)

Hangouts currently supports Android 2.3+ devices with front-facing cameras (and iOS support is coming soon). The new mobile app is rolling out to Android Market today, so you can start hanging out at any time, from just about anywhere.

93. Hangouts On Air
Google+ users already use Hangouts to create intimate onscreen experiences—with family members, prayer groups, even people with certain medical conditions. But sometimes you want to speak to a large audience, or alternatively, view as a spectator. In these cases a public broadcast is what’s needed, so today we’re introducing Hangouts On Air.

The setup is simple enough: just start a normal hangout, and you’ll have the option to broadcast and record your session. Once you’re “On Air,” up to nine others can join your hangout (as usual), and anyone can watch your live broadcast:

Hangouts On Air: Stream View (left), Full-screen Mode (right)

We’re starting with a limited number of broadcasters, but any member of the Google+ community can tune in. In fact: we’ll be hosting our very first On Air hangout with will.i.am on Wednesday night, September 21. For more information visit will.i.am’s or my profile on Google+.

94, 95, 96, 97. Hangouts with extras
Spending time together goes hand in hand with actually doing things together. Dinner with family can easily turn into movie night at the local theater, for instance. And running into old friends can inspire anything from photo sharing to vacation planning. Hangouts has always included a basic set of in-room actions (like group chat and co-viewing of YouTube videos), but we want to make it easier to do a lot more. That’s why we’re previewing some extras, including:
  • Screensharing: for when you want to show off your vacation photos, your high score, your lesson plan or whatever else is on your screen
  • Sketchpad: for when you want to draw, doodle, or just scribble together
  • Google Docs: for when you want to write, plan or present something with others
  • Named Hangouts: for when you want to join or create a public hangout about a certain topic (like fashion or music or sports...)
Hangouts with extras: Screensharing (left), Sketchpad (right)

Hangouts with extras: Docs (left), Named Hangouts (right)

The extras are still under construction, but we wanted to preview these features and get your feedback sooner versus later. So start a hangout, click “Try Hangouts with extras” in the green room, and let us know what you think.

98. Hangouts APIs
If field trial has taught us anything about Hangouts, it’s that the community is overflowing with creative individuals. So in the wake of last week’s Google+ API launch, we’re also releasing a basic set of Hangouts APIs. If you're a developer who wants to build new kinds of apps and games (and who-knows-what-else), then you can find more details on the Google+ platform blog.

+Search: find the people and posts you care about

99. Search in Google+
You’ve been asking for it, and we’ve been busy building it, so today we’re bringing Google’s search expertise to Google+. Just type what you’re looking for into the Google+ search box, and we’ll return relevant people and posts, as well as popular content from around the web.

If you’re into photography, for example, then you’ll see other enthusiasts and lots of great pictures. If you care more about cooking, then you’ll see other chefs and food from around the globe. In all cases, Google+ search results include items that only you can see, so family updates are just as easy to find as international news.

Search in Google+: photography (left), cooking (right)

With more than 1 billion items shared and received every day, we’re excited to see how search will connect people through their posts on Google+.

+Everyone

100. Anyone can sign up for Google+—no invitation required.
For the past 12 weeks we’ve been in field trial, and during that time we’ve listened and learned a great deal. We’re nowhere near done, but with the improvements we’ve made so far we’re ready to move from field trial to beta, and introduce our 100th feature: open signups. This way anyone can visit google.com/+, join the project and connect with the people they care about.

Syntax Notes

To be functional, each DOS command must be entered in a particular way: this command entry structure is known as the command's "syntax." The syntax "notation" is a way to reproduce the command syntax in print.

For example, you can determine the items that are optional, by looking for information that is printed inside square brackets. The notation [d:], for example, indicates an optional drive designation. The command syntax, on the other hand, is how YOU enter the command to make it work.

Command Syntax Elements
1. Command Name

The DOS command name is the name you enter to start the DOS program (a few of the DOS commands can be entered using shortcut names). The DOS command name is always entered first. In this book, the command is usually printed in uppercase letters, but you can enter command names as either lowercase or uppercase or a mix of both.

2. Space

Always leave a space after the command name.

3. Drive Designation

The drive designation (abbreviated in this book as "d:") is an option for many DOS commands. However, some commands are not related to disk drives and therefore do not require a drive designation. Whenever you enter a DOS command that deals with disk drives and you are already working in the drive in question, you do not have to enter the drive designator. For example, if you are working in drive A (when the DOS prompt A> is showing at the left side of the screen) and you want to use the DIR command to display a directory listing of that same drive, you do not have to enter the drive designation. If you do not enter a drive designation, DOS always assumes you are referring to the drive you are currently working in (sometimes called the "default" drive).

4. A Colon

When referring to a drive in a DOS command, you must always follow the drive designator with a colon (:) (this is how DOS recognizes it as a drive designation).

5. Pathname

A pathname (path) refers to the path you want DOS to follow in order to act on the DOS command. As described in Chapter 3, it indicates the path from the current directory or subdirectory to the files that are to be acted upon.

6. Filename

A filename is the name of a file stored on disk. As described in Chapter 1, a filename can be of eight or fewer letters or other legal characters.

7. Filename Extension

A filename extension can follow the filename to further identify it. The extension follows a period and can be of three or fewer characters. A filename extension is not required.

8. Switches

Characters shown in a command syntax that are represented by a letter or number and preceded by a forward slash (for example, "/P") are command options (sometimes known as "switches"). Use of these options activate special operations as part of a DOS command's functions.

9. Brackets

Items enclosed in square brackets are optional; in other words, the command will work in its basic form without entering the information contained inside the brackets.

10. Ellipses

Ellipses (...) indicate that an item in a command syntax can be repeated as many times as needed.

11. Vertical Bar

When items are separated by a vertical bar (|), it means that you enter one of the separated items. For example: ON | OFF means that you can enter either ON or OFF, but not both

What's your dream smartphone?

I've been reviewing cell phones and smartphones for more than seven years, and the mobile space has changed a lot in that time. We've gone from smartphones with monochrome screens, no cameras, and basic PDA functions to handsets with glassless 3D displays, dual-core processors, robust Web browsers, and much more. As they say, we've come a long way, baby.
Yet, even with all these advancements, I can't help but feel like I've been reviewing the same device over and over again in recent months, just in a slightly different package. So when a reader e-mailed me a couple of weeks ago asking me what I would want in a dream phone, I thought this would be a good time as any to come up with a list.
I could go over the top and come with something like the fictional Pomegranate phone (which was actually a clever ad campaign for Nova Scotia, of all things), but I decided to create my Franken-phone with features that exist today. I know, I know--boring.
Anyway, let's start with design. The advent of all touch-screen devices has certainly done wonders for how we interact with our devices and how we consume data and media on our phones. However, it's also lead to devices that all look alike, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss the physical keyboard of my old BlackBerry Bold. There are certainly models with slide-out QWERTY keyboards, and handset manufacturers have done a good job of slimming them down, so they're not so bulky (see: T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide).
However, I don't want to deal with any moving parts and just want to be able to pull out my phone and start typing. That's why the RIM BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 was so appealing to me. It combines an excellent keyboard with a sharp touch screen that's smaller in size compared to today's 4-inch displays, but it's something I'm willing to compromise on for this kind of form factor.
What I'm not willing to compromise on is build quality. Yes, I like my smartphones compact and sleek, but I don't care that the phone is the thinnest this or that; if it feels like a plastic toy, I will take a pass. If I'm paying $200 for a device, I want something that feels like I'm getting my money's worth. The Bold has a solid, premium design, but unfortunately, it's running a mediocre operating system that, which leads me to my next point.
I'm not loyal to one OS. I think each platform has its pros and cons, so my ideal OS would be a combination of several systems. I'd want the user interface of Windows Phone; the ease of use and app catalog of iOS; the customization abilities of Android; and the multitasking capabilities of WebOS. That's not too much to ask for, right?
As I said earlier, we've come a long way since the days of the first smartphones. Nowadays, we get caught up in specs and are quick to criticize a phone for not having this feature or that feature, which is certainly fair, but I think it's just as important to stop and realize all the things that are smartphones are capable of. Just think, we're going to be seeing quad-core processors in our phones within the next year.
So when I think about what features I want in my dream phone, I'm pretty happy that we can already easily browse the Web, get navigation guidance, play music and video, and take photos and video. I could care less about some of the more flashy things, like 3D; instead, I'd like to see continued improvement on existing features. But above all else, I hope we see battery life start to improve on future smartphones.
Obviously, my needs and wants will be different from yours, so I'd love to hear about your dream phone. Let me know in the comments selection below, and I'll pull some of the best responses and post them in a separate blog later this week.

Facebook adding Spotify, MOG, Rdio, Rhapsody, and more?

We may finally have the answer to the great mystery of who Facebook will partner with to bring a music service to its massive social network: Everyone.
Dutch entrepreneur and developer Yvo Schaap took a look at the HTML for all the major music services and found that several had references in meta tags to what appears to be a custom Facebook format.
Specifically, Schaap found Spotify, MOG, Rhapsody, Soundcloud, Rdio, Deezer (France), and VEVO all seem to be tagging their songs to be Facebook-compatible.
Among the notable services absent from the list are Pandora and Napster. Pandora has been thought to be among Facebook's most likely partners for adding music streaming to its network.
Schaap explained briefly on his blog what he thinks he's found:
The undocumented mentioned audio type audio/vnd.facebook.bridge seems to refer to a format that bridges audio between the streaming services and the Facebook platform.

It seems all the partners are ready: free streaming, link between the music service and Facebook, all we need is to wait few more days.
(Credit: Screen capture by Eric Mack/CNET)
Facebook is widely expected to announce the details of a new music service at its F8 conference on Thursday. There have also been reports that some sort of stronger relationship between Facebook and Hulu will be announced at the gathering of developers.
Whatever Facebook announces, it will come just one week after Rdio and MOG both joined Spotify in offering a free account option. Clearly, the floodgates are beginning to open in the streaming world.
